Thursday 9/29

We worked on Lesson 3.1 in class today by completing a Desmos Activity. All students should start to become experts in determining the rate of change and unit rate from a graph. Please remember to use the solutions linked above to check and correct your classwork and homework.

Be sure you understand and can use the key terms from this lesson:
  • rate
  • rate of change
  • per
  • unit rate
  • rise
  • run
  • Slope

Desmos Codes

Period 1: 4YV4
Period 2: QGMJ
Period 3: 2GFA
Period 4: 6HD4
Period 6: PP8C

Wednesday 9/28

Today we took a look at Lesson 3.1 in more detail, learning the four-step process to determine the rate of change from a graph.

Parents: Ask your child to describe the four-step process for finding the rate of change from a graph.

Homework: Finish up any classwork you did not complete and do pages 140-141.

Tuesday 9/27

Today we dove into Chapter 3 with the first part of Lesson 3.1, where we learned how to find the rate of change from a graph.

We'll get into "rise" and "run" tomorrow! Today was a good warm-up.

Homework: Finish textbook pages 132-133 (#9-15) Period 6. All other periods, Answer the Essential Question on a separate sheet of paper: How do I find the rate of change when given a scenario?

Monday 9/26

We took our Chapter 2 Test today in class and will be moving on to Chapter 3 tomorrow.

Interested in looking ahead? Here's the Chapter 3 Pre-Test. Totally optional, but a good idea to use as a study guide in a couple weeks.

Homework: MATHia Practice

Thursday, September 22, 2016

Thursday 9/22

I was away today, but in my absence you worked in MATHia X.

Our Linear Equations module should be wrapped up by Friday.

To ensure you're on track to finish on time, you should be completing 2-3 workspaces per week. Use both your in-class time and MATHia homework time to be sure you're on pace.

Homework: MATHia practice

Wednesday 9/21

Today I was out of the class with the rest of the 8th grade Math teachers collaborating on how best to support our students :). While I was out of the class you all worked in MATHia. Make sure you are staying on track with your progress so you can receive credit for your completed workspaces.

Remember Module 1, Linear Equations, is due by this FRIDAY! We will be spending tomorrow in MATHia so you will have plenty of time in class to complete problems. If you are behind, you should complete MATHia at home or jump in the library before, after school, or during lunch.

Homework: 15 mins of MATHia

Tuesday 9/20

Today we wrapped up our Hot Shirts and US Shirts analysis and started an awesome Desmos Activity about linear and nonlinear functions, instead of Lesson 2.7. If you didn't get a chance to finish it in class, please be sure to do so at home tonight.

Go to, login to your Desmos account (or create one, if you haven't already), and then type in your class code.

  • Period 3: SDZK
  • Period 4: GANY
  • Period 6:X5ZV
  • Period 1: Q6B5
  • Period 2:J2X8

Parents: You can do the activity too! If you'd like to see all the awesome things your child got to do in class today, head to, and enter the class code of any of my periods to play along at home. Enjoy!

Homework: Finish the Desmos activity

Monday 9/19

Today we continued our look at linear functions, equations, tables, and graphs with the last part of  Lesson 2.5 and the first part of Lesson 2.6. Instead of working in Carnegie I separated the class based on US Shirts and Hot Shirts.

We discovered that we've got a competitor in the shirt-making marketplace and our boss has tasked us with some analysis. Tomorrow we will bring the groups together and focus on the analysis part.

Homework: Textbook pages 96-97 "Talk the Talk"

Friday 9/16

Week 6 is in the books and Chapter 2 is now almost complete. That means our Chapter 2 test is right around the corner! Have you been studying and reviewing your homework and class work each day?

Also, the Linear Equations module in MATHia X is due Next Friday 9/23.  Have you completed all your workspaces? If not, be sure to login and finish up more tonight!

Here is this week's extra credit:

Thursday, September 15, 2016

Thursday 9/15

We dove into linear functions today with Lesson 2.4. We took a look at how word problems, constants, variables, tables, expressions, equations, graphs, domains, and ranges are connected.

Homework: Finish textbook pages 87-88 & complete Talk the Talk 89-90.

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Wednesday 9/14

We finished our introduction to relations and functions today with the second half of Lesson 2.3.

Homework: Summarize what we learned yesterday and today, using and explaining all key terms (there are ten of them).

Tuesday, September 13, 2016

Tuesday 9/13

Today we began our look at relations and functions with the first half of Lesson 2.3. We'll finish the second half of the lesson tomorrow.

Parents: Ask your students about relations, functions, input, output, x-values, y-values, domain, range, mappings, and sets today to determine how much they learned. There were a lot of new key terms presented today that we want them to master.

Homework: Finish textbook pages 71-72

Monday 9/12

We worked in MATHia X today in preparation for the second MATHia X grading date 9/23. I want to thank ALL my students for sending the birthday love and helping me celebrate. I loved all the goodies and notes students brought me. It was one of the best birthdays ever!

Need help getting MATHia X configured at home? Check out Carnegie Learning's MATHia support page.

For those that know they need to brush up on the distributive property and combining like terms, check out the links below for additional practice. It's tough to succeed in Math 8 without being proficient in all your Math 6 & 7 skills.

Thursday 9/8

Today we spent some time talking about MATHia X grading expectations and began reviewing equations in order to prepare for our Common Assessment.

We will have our first Common Assessment on Friday. The assessment will help us to see where we are now and where we are going in the curriculum. No need to stress and all I ask is that you try your best!

HW: Complete the review packet

Wednesday 9/7

Today in class we finished our look at making sense of graphs and how they apply to the real world with the second half of Lesson 2.2.

If you're not satisfied with your test grade, you're welcome to retake the test during lunch tomorrow Grades can be improved up to a maximum score of 75% ("C") on a retake. Be sure to study your errors and the chapter to get yourself prepared. MATHia can help!

Tuesday 9/6

Today we passed back our Chapter 1 test and reviewed the majority of the test. I showed the students how to use Desmos as a tool to check their work when simplifying equations. Retakes for the Chapter 1 test will take place on Thursday during lunch. I will pass out lunch passes for students tomorrow. Common Assessment # 1 will be coming up on Friday. Please start reviewing concepts now at home.
